Chicks
We are always hatching year round and have a really varied range of chicks. We will have breeds that are suited to most people, from the tiny Dutch bantams to giant Brahmas. Hybrids are great for new keepers as they are very hardy, lay well and are often the most calm breeds too.
Rearing your own chicks is perfect for beginners as they can be kept in the house for the first few weeks. This will give you time to handle the little ones and get them used to you.
Guaranteed Female chicks. We usually have a range of these in stock. The hatchery’s that we work with offer no cull Female Chicks, for welfare reasons we only use such suppliers. Using very fancy technology the embryo is sexed during the first few days of incubation, this is known as in ovo sexing (inside the eggs) that way they can only hatch the Females and no Males are hatched unnecessarily.
Unsexed Chicks. We hatch a range of breeds here at New Cottage Poultry, many of them can not be sexed at a young age. When buying unsexed breeds from us they come with the guarantee that as soon as they are mature and ready to live with adult birds then we will happily take back any boys you don’t need free of charge and place them in a suitable home. Thankfully we have a lot of customers who visit that are able to offer the boys a home.
Vaccinations. All of our Chicks are vaccinated for Mareks as a minimum, some are also vaccinated for other things but you can give us a call if you have specific requirements, some customers even request fully unvaccinated Chicks and we are happy to supply these but we would need to pre book them before they hatch as they are vaccinated on the day of hatch.
Caring for your Chicks. Our chick starter sets are always available; these include a Cage, heat light set, feeder, drinker, food and bedding.
Please note for welfare, we will never sell a bird on its own. We always sell them in two’s or more and recommend that you keep chicks in a group of at least three where possible.
Depending on the time of year your chicks will need to be kept inside for 4-8 weeks. Once they are feathered, they will be ready to live outside. Again we are always on hand to give you any aftercare so if you are not sure of anything we are only a call or message away.

• Exchequer Leghorn – A fantastic layer of pure White eggs, pretty markings and a great addition to any flock. £10 each Unsexed
• Barnevelder – Absolutely stunning Birds, they are calm, friendly and lay lots of Brown eggs. £10 each Unsexed
• Marsbar (olive egg layer) – These are made by crossing a Maran and a Legbar, they produce a nice Black Bird with a tuft on their head. Perfect in any flock and a really interesting egg colour too. £10 each Unsexed
• Farmyard Mix – These are always a popular one as they are such a mixed bunch and you always get something different. They are from a range of Hybrid Hens crossed with a selection interesting Cockerels, the resulting Chicks can produce a rainbow of egg colours and will be good layers too. £7 each Unsexed
• Le Bresse – These are a dual purpose breed who lay around 200-250 eggs a year. Popular with people wanting to be more self sufficient as the Cockerels and Hens make Two very useful Birds £12
• Black Autralorp Bantam – A calm natured breed who lay really well £10
• Pekin, Polish & Silkie Bantams unsexed £12 each, please check availability as these are so popular at the moment stock levels can change frequently.
